Value Based Spending
Money and budgeting are on my mind right now. The province I live in is tightening its purse strings in attempts to find efficiencies and decrease debt. This is admirable but not without controversy. Public services are still necessary. Without getting politically charged, it lead me to think about how I personally spend money and how businesses manage their budgets. We will typically spend our money on what we value. There is of course a wants versus needs analysis. But there is also a quality of life component. I want to save money for the future, but I want to have a comfortable lifestyle. 98% of the time I am good with my black drip coffee from home, but today my Venti Caramel Brulee Latte on a snowy day, turned my mood around.
The old adage that "time is money" rings true. There are things we feel that we "can" do ourselves, but we just can't do it all. As a working mom, I have hired a house cleaner to pick up the slack. I am capable of cleaning, but there are so many other demands on my time. Likewise, a business owner or manager has many "hats" to wear and duties to juggle. My father-in-law, who is one of the most generous people I know, has a saying I love..."let the next guy make a buck". It is admirable be stewardly and resourceful. But being cheap and stingy are less attractive qualities. As a business, can you work with less staff and still have the ideal output? Sometimes it's hard to justify a new employee's salary, but typically it results in increased productivity and growth. Not only that, do you have the time to sort through applications, read resumes and conduct interviews? Even if you feel capable of these tasks, they are distracting you from your core business. It's not uncommon to outsource your accounting or marketing functions. Hiring the right staff is an investment that will payoff and benefit you greatly.
