Summer Staffing Opportunities

At Hire Standard, we take on a summer student each year to support our team. We have found that it gives us an opportunity to take vacation time without feeling the pinch of being short staffed. It is something to think about if this is not your usual practice. In addition to providing extra help for a typically busy season, it supports the next generation of the workforce to gain valuable skills. So many students need work experience to be employable in the future. Summer jobs help build their resume and network. It also allows them to try out different tasks and settings to see what they like and to inform their future decision making. Of course, they need the money to keep paying their way through school too, again equipping the next generation of workers for the benefit of our society and economy.  The reward to you as an employer, besides the extra ‘set of hands’ and contributing to the next generation, is that having a summer student can bring an eager, new perspective with fresh insight.

If you require coverage for the full 4 months from a summer student, College and University students are typically available to start at the beginning of May, so March is a good time to post your opportunity. Some eager students are looking to secure summer work even earlier, so it doesn’t hurt to post the opportunity in February. The Canada Summer Job Grant is a grant offered by the Government of Canada that helps to support the additional employee’s wage, for those that qualify and are chosen to receive the funds.  The application comes out each year in November, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead to apply for funding. However, be aware that the decision on whether or not you will receive funding sometimes doesn’t happen until after the start of the work period, which makes it difficult to base hiring a summer employee on whether or not you receive the grant.
